What is CYF?
CodeYourFuture (CYF) is a UK-based non-profit organisation that trains some of the most deprived members of society to gain the tech skills needed to change their lives.
CYF runs a basic online skills programme to help digital inclusion and various vocational tech skills programmes to help people start tech careers.
Volunteer professionals run the programme, training CYF students in an inclusive, welcoming community.
My Role
Primarily my role as a career mentor pairs me with students on CYF courses, helping them prepare for transitioning from the CYF world into their first development role. The role helps them develop their professional skills along side their technical skills to help them thrive in their application and interview processes and on to their first day in the new job.
In addition to this I help review code reviews that students submit as part of their courses, helping students understand concepts they have grasped well and areas that could be improved.
More recently, on Saturday's, I've led classes by delivering new content to students and running sessions against the lesson plan. This is less about a traditional teacher and more about creating conversation between the students to help them learn new concepts and challenge thoughts.
