Purpose
This was a linked project to the FlatPlan Client Dashboard, enabling the evergreen article generation.
Context
Publishers on Apple News generate revenue from advertisements that appear in their articles. The total revenue generated on the platform is shared across the publishers with the split being calculated based on engagement metrics for each publisher. The higher the engagement metrics... the larger your piece of the revenue.
Largely there is a direct correlation between the number of articles published and engagement. The more articles you have the more appealing your content is to a wider audience and the more likely that articles may be featured by Apple or within topic areas - features are a powerful boost to engagement metrics and... revenue.
Evergreen content
Evergreen content is an publishing industry term, referring to content that is not linked to the news cycle. This means that the content can be published at any point, regardless of what is happening across the world or the time of year. Some examples of evergreen content include: Best 5 TVs on sale right now or Why Your Houseplants Keep Dying (And How to Fix It).
It's engaging content that can span a broad content range and often lends itself to affiliate marketing, which is another revenue stream for publishers.
We wanted to provide publishers with a list of evergreen content articles, that they had previously published, so that they could re-surface old but still relevant content to drive engagement. We detailed before the correlation between the number of articles published and engagement metrics. This means one of two things: Write more content or resurface previously produced content. Writing new content is expensive and time-consuming but evergreen content, with the right strategy, can be re-cycled time and time again - generating recurring revenue from one piece of content.
